Ten years ago, Kate Braestrup, her husband, Drew, and their four young children were enjoying a morning like any other. Then Drew, a Maine state trooper, left for work and everything changed. On the very roads that he patrolled each day, an oncoming driver lost control, and Kate lost her husband.
Stunned and grieving, Kate decided to pursue what had been her husband's dream and became a minister. And soon she found a most unusual calling: serving as chaplain for search-and-rescue missions in the Maine woods, giving comfort to people whose loved ones are missing - and to the wardens who sometimes have to deal with dreadful outcomes. Whether with parents whose six-year-old daughter has vanished into the woods, with wardens as they search for a snowmobiler trapped under the ice, or with a man whose sister left an infant seat and a suicide note in her car by the side of the road, Braestrup provides solace, understanding, and spiritual guidance when they're needed most.
Here If You Need Me recounts Kate Braestrup's journey from grief to faith to happiness.

I appreciated this book from a number of perspectives: woman, mother, spiritual (not religious) being and slice-of-life humor. Ms. Braestrup's writing style is like a fragrant cup of coffee on chilly morning - revelatory, soothing and refreshingly unique. Wonderful insight into the world of police chaplains as well as thoughts on grief, spirituality, God and really being PRESENT.

This is a painful yet hopeful true story, one that we all hope never to experience. The author has an incredible talent for articulating her thoughts on death, love, God, and many of the other "big questions" in life. Although I adhere to a different faith tradition, I found her take on these questions to be approachable and wise. I have recommended this book to friends of all faiths and none.

P.S. Skip her sequel - very uneven and disappointing.

I really enjoyed this well written book. It deals with loss and coping, and is both humourous and touching. It is a book that makes you think about life, death, faith and spirituality.

Oh, I am enjoying htis book. Its an easy read about a woman who is a chaplin for the Maine Warden service. Helping with search and rescue and such. But it is HOW she writes that is such a gem.

Also this is a great book for those who are non-believers or those who question their faith because is not into the faith part of it. She is into the being there, really being there, for others and it is beautiful and refreshing.
