This is actually an alternative universe series. Colonies in an alternative America are ignored and dismissed by their colonial masters, except when a challenge comes from alternative France, complete with zombies and an adolescent dragon. There is Magic as well. Stackpole makes it work. Great historical analogies, that are quite correct. Outstanding development of characters and their relationships-without taking away from the story. Fans of military and historical fiction will enjoy this.

An excellent book by an author that should be more well known. This is a book that should appeal both to fans of sword and sorcery fantasy and also to readers of historical fiction.

Colonial America with magick and dragons! Well, wurms, but they are almost dragons! In this story, Stackpole re-imagines the French and Indian War with a definite fantasy twist. The colonial land of Mystria is familiar with its history, landscapes, people, and concerns. It is a good solid story, with nicely fleshed-out characters and a land described by its beauty and danger. The ending was a bit of a letdown, but I am hoping the second book in the series will keep things moving. A little lighter than Harry Turtledove's series, but his fans should enjoy.
