The Doctor is returning home to Gallifrey with the remains of his arch-nemesis, the Master. Forced off course, the TARDIS arrives in San Francisco on New Year's Eve 1999, where the Doctor is critically wounded in a gangland gun battle. At the local hospital, Dr. Grace Holloway fights, and fails, to save his life. Later, in the morgue, the Doctor wakes up a new man. But he is not the only one, the Master has also found himself a new body. As the clock counts down to the start of the new millennium, can the Doctor stop his oldest enemy from destroying all life on Earth?

I liked this movie. It's very Doctor Who, with a suitably quirky Doctor and a classic villain reborn. I thought that the plot resolution was poorly explained and not very believable, but that's sadly not uncommon for Doctor Who. And how did they get around the Master's fate in this movie? Anyway, the movie does have good acting, great characters, and plenty of hilarious moments. Despite its flaws, I think it's worth watching, if only for the performances of these four characters: Paul McGann's eighth Doctor, the Master in his possessed body, the comic-relief morgue employee, and the stoic ITAR security guard (you'll understand why I singled out him when you see Institute kick off the new millennium).

I checked this DVD out because my older niece, in college in London, went to the opening and I wanted to see what all the excitement was about. Wasn't too impressed with this "Doctor Who" but at least now I can comment on this with my niece.

While, on the whole, the movie isn't awful, it is not what one would expect from Doctor Who. Being co-produced in America, I think it lost some of it quirkiness and zing. However, the story line is decent. It is decently acted. And it is too bad we didn't get more Paul McGann produced episodes from the other side of the pond.

This was a Britsh/American co-production. It's an interesting curiosity, but it's not very good television--a formulaic American action show that doesn't seem particularly Doctor Who-like. Paul McGann isn't bad as the Doctor, but the material doesn't give him much to work with.
