Neil MacGregor's radio series 'A History of the World in 100 Objects' has been a unique event that has set a benchmark for public service broadcasting in the UK and across the world. This book is the tie-in to that event, reproducing the scripts describing the objects that made us who we are.

Two points of fact. First, you can't learn the history of the entire world by listening to 100 15-minute audio segments about 100 different "historically significant" objects. Second, anyone who has attended an American high school knows the problem
w/learning "History" is that the subject can quickly become mind-numbingly boring. This CD set takes the first path -- stay the boredom by providing some brief but interesting stories about world history. Five 15-minute segments per CD about 5 objects, yielding 20 audio CD's total. Overall the producers do their job well. It would be easy to complain it's not comprehensive enough, but that's the compromise. My three minor complaints are that (1) it seems like it is trying to make a point of some kind by focusing too much on religious objects, especially those from the middle east; and (2) it's over-produced, with unnecessary over-the-top sound effects; and (3) many of the segments are recorded on location rather than in a sound booth, making what the narrator is saying difficult to understand sometimes, like it is coming from an echo-chamber. Still, overall, this 20 audio CD set makes for an interesting and worthwhile listen for folks who'd like to learn just a little bit more about world history.
