I admit it; I approached this book looking for gossip about author Marton's stormy union with the late journalist and ABC News anchor Peter Jennings.

I found it, but found also a very moving account of Marton's love affair not just with Jennings but with her 3rd husband, American diplomat and former Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke, who sudden death in December 2010 devastated her. Her memories of Holbrooke particularly, and her life with him, make me wish I'd known him personally.

Very interesting story.

If you're looking for a book about living in Paris, this isn't it. Kati keeps returning to Paris, but this is about her life as an foreign journalist married first to Peter Jennings, then Richard Holbrooke. If you don't know who they were, this may not interest you.

This was not the book I was expecting. I guess because I had no idea who the author was I expected more of a flavour of Paris. Marton has had a full life from the sounds of it, but throughout this narrative all I can hear is someone who still has to come to terms with her life and what she wants out of it. I found her too gushy at times, to a point that almost sounded false. It was interesting, a quick read, with little glimpses into a Paris that I would like to come to know better. As a memoir, I was left thinking this was a bit of a gloss over.

I got bored with this book 3/4 of the way through. Some interesting facts, plenty of name dropping, but, as others have said, emotionally flat.

Oddly not very emotionally engaging. It's an interesting story and she's certainly lived a vibrant and exciting life, but somehow (perhaps protecting herself?) this book is so emotionally contained that for me, I found it lacking.

Not as good as I thought it would be. More like a meandering recollections memorial to her dead husband. She was a tv journalist, so she writes like that... mostly: we did this, met that person, had lunch at our favourite cafe. Ho hum.
