I had just finished reading the book when I bought this movie. I must admit that I was not expecting all that much. Charles Dickens makes it very clear who the murderer is even though he died before he could finish the book. What this movie does is takes the clues and threads that are left in the story and ties them together in a logical and enjoyable way. The ending is simply brilliant, a great twist that I, at least, did not see coming. Matthew Rhys is brilliant as an unhappy choirmaster who escapes his life through opium.

This is a 2012 2-PART BBC television adaptation of the unfinished novel by Charles Dickens.
The novel was unfinished at the time of Dickens's death on June 9, 1870, and his ending for it is unknown.
However, this film has a new ending, which is somewhat ill-contrived and seems to come from nowhere.
Although it has unexpected and unbelievable twists and turns, the ending appears to ruin the seriousness of the theme.

Interesting plot, but the music director was really creepy.

Completely loved the tone and atmosphere. As well as the acting! Dark fun.

Brilliant! Until the end. The filmography, costuming and sets are wonderful. The star studded cast does a masterful job bringing to life believable characters. Freddie Fox creates a truly believable self centered, egotistical and unlikeable Edwin. The suggestion that the relationship between the noble Neville and Edwin ends up like a happily ever after fairy tale takes the young men so far out of the previously defined characters. Ignore that poor decision and you will find this an emotional, suspenseful and beautiful interpretation of Dickens' greatest work.

The handsome architecture of the church adds much to the tone of the film. The intense stares of the twins are quite arresting, spooky scary. The casting and costumes and acting are all superb, but one comes to expect this of Masterpiece Classics from the UK.

A Shakespeare novel of love, insanity, murder and one opiated villain made good drama.

It's a bit dark and dreary to look at, but then it's Dickens and the subject matter is dark too. A very good production.

While the conclusion to Dickens' unfinished novel is rather dopey, the acting itself is great! The pace of the film is very quick and I was never bored. Interesting storylines as well. It's too bad that Dickens never finished this novel. Recommended.
