Did not enjoy this as much as earlier MCC work. Melodies rather monotonous on this CD.

Sadness, loss, resilience, and recovery are themes which are explored and infused with remarkable beauty. I have no idea why sadness can be so compelling in song, but maybe it's because MCC has a way of delving into that mysterious, private world and creating word pictures that we can recognize. Her tender lyrics perhaps clarify and give voice to unspoken, hidden and confused feelings and make us feel less alone in having them. Maybe there is nothing wrong with us after all and we are just part of a fragile human race. It's a relief that just because we feel deeply, that doesn't make us "odd or strange, just quietly rearranged; sometimes the biggest change stays out of sight." It's okay, and we'll be okay too. John Jennings, one of her former bandmates who still tours with her, has said "Chapin knows how to decode loneliness." As she herself says in a song from an earlier album, "Well there's no doubt that life's a mystery, but so too is the human heart." Two outstanding songs, my favourites on this album, are "What to keep and what to throw away" and "Fading away."
