Mainard's wife, Bertrild, is no one's friend; so tracking down her murderer is no easy task. At first I thought Gellis was going for a "Murder on the Orient Express" solution. None of the suspects led blameless lives, and the path through the clues was challenging. (I toyed with the idea of making a chart to keep track.) When Sir Druerie arrived, the action speeded up considerably, and the mystery was solved. It did take a chapter at the end to tie up the considerable number of loose ends. I enjoy working through the clues, and the well-drawn characters at the Old Priory Guesthouse, as well as their opponents, drew me into the story. Gellis' knowledge of the period and complex plotting are definitely to my taste. Her descriptive talents also appeal to me--the excruciating details of the dirt in the "stews", the colors and textures of clothing, the exultation of Diot (a new character) in being clean.
