Book News
Dickerson, an art writer and former art historian at the American Academy of Art, presents a guide to art history in the form of a series of accessible questions. It is part of a larger "handy answer book" series. After an introductory chapter on the principles of art history--which in this book is focused on visual arts like painting, architecture, sculpture--the rest of the text is organized chronologically. She considers art from as far back as 5,000 BCE up to the present, and from across the globe. The chronological chapters are organized into seven sections. The questions are fairly self-contained, but also hang together subtly (e.g. after a question about what a "Byzantine icon" is appears a question about what the "iconoclastic controversy" was). They mostly take the form of who/what questions, sometimes qualified as a difference (e.g. between romanticism and realism). A glossary of aesthetic and craft terms appears in the back and most pages have brilliant color photos or reprints. Distributed by Independent Publishers Group.
