Lady Alexia Maccon, soulless, is at it again, only this time the trouble is not her fault. When a mad ghost threatens the queen, Alexia is on the case, following a trail that leads her deep into her husband's past. Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux's latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines, Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant.

Will Alexia manage to determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria before it is too late? Is it the vampires again or is there a traitor lurking about in wolf's clothing? And what, exactly, has taken up residence in Lord Akeldama's second best closet?

HEARTLESS is the fourth book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

Carriger's really amped up the crazy in this edition. Very appropriate for the penultimate book of the series.

I can't wait to see how this series ends. I feel like we are getting closer to some answers and the climax of the whole adventure.

I just love the whimsy of this series! It's a humorous steampunk paranormal romance adventure book with quite a bit of upper crust British etiquette being broken this time around. The author just pulls it off so well, even with a waddling Alexia. That said, the resolution frustrated me a bit. Looking forward to the next and final book.

Welcome to the world, Baby Maccon! All I can say is how typically Alexia it is to have her baby in this way. I’ll be very interested to see how the new little bundle of joy affects Pack life and the storyline.

I'm still convinced that the first book in this series was the best, but where the entire story has been gradually losing steam, the end of this one puts a twist on the tale that (I hope) should revive it.

I agree with other reviewers that this book is a return to form. Book 3 was much weaker, aside from the emotional drama with Lord Akeldama and Biffy. Book 4 does better, satisfying with drama, wit, action, and surprises!

A rollicking, silly summer read exciting enough to make my heart beat faster.

I loved it. I laughed out loud more than with any book I can remember. It's just the wit and the phrases she uses and the way she puts things together, it just cracks me up. Each passage is crafted for maximum effect, perfectly suited to the tone of the book, there isn't one thing that's out of place. It's unique and tremendously fun. And it was better than the last book as well. Can't wait for the next one.

A return to form for Carriger - Books 1 and 2 of the Parasol Protectorate were fun romps, but seemed to run out of steam by book 3.
