This is such a silly book, and so badly written. I could manage about 50 pages and then gave up. Joy is painful to read, her best friend is an ugly caricature, "Ink" is .. garbled. Plot is non-existent.

I enjoyed this book very much. It's interesting and i believe its a book that everyone can enjoy. I am very interested in seeing more of Mrs. Metcalf's work.

Indelible is a myth-fantasy contemporary YA that centers on Joy, an ex-gymnist high schooler whose family life is falling apart. It's a romance, an adventure/mystery, and a coming-of-age. And it's OK, but not great.

What makes it awesome? The descriptions, especially of the dark and frightening, is fun. And the embracing of dark (read: original text) fairy tales is lovely. Joy's main strengths lie in her figuring stuff out, taking chances, and being utterly honest (with herself, and others). And Inq is delightful.

What makes it less than brilliant? I was caught up in the Joy/Ink romance as it evolved...until I realized that Joy was essentially creating the humanity in Ink...which meant she was molding someone into what she needed to love. And that sort of creeped me out a bit, but maybe Metcalf will go into the problems with this in Book 2.
(also, for the record, I have issue with Joy NOT having issues with the fact that Ink is utterly inhuman. I mean, shouldn't it bother you on a cellular level that this is a cross-species romance?)

Overall, it was pleasant to read, and though I don't feel compelled to pick up the next book, I feel comfortable recommending it to fans of female-protagonist contemporary fantasy YA.
