After losing her husband, Ruth leaves her home to follow her beloved mother-in-law, Naomi, to Israel, where she lives a life of hardship until the wealthy and honored owner of the field where she works begins to show her favor.

Moody

With lost love, a barren womb, and an empty future, Ruth leaves her home to follow the woman she has grown to love as a true parent, her late husband’s mother, Naomi.

Ruth arrives in Israel with nothing to recommend her but Naomi’s love. She is reduced to gathering leftovers once the harvesters have finished collecting from the field—a job only for the lowest of the low, to keep them from starvation.

But God has other plans for Ruth’s life.

Ruth is shocked when the owner of the field—one of the wealthiest and most honored men of Judah—begins to show her favor.  He tells himself he is only being kind to his cousin Naomi’s chosen daughter when he goes out of his way to protect her from harm, but his heart knows better.

Obstacles. Heartache. Withered dreams. How can God forge love, passion, and new hope between two such different people?

Two women. All alone. With no provision…Can they find hope in a foreign land?

Ruth leaves her home with a barren womb and an empty future after losing her husband. She forsakes her abusive parents and follows the woman she has grown to love as a true parent, her late husband's mother, Naomi.

Ruth arrives in Israel with nothing to recommend her but Naomi's love. She is destitute, grief-stricken, and unwanted by the people of God.

But God has great plans for her.

While everyone considers Ruth an unworthy outsider, she is shocked to find the owner of the field—one of the wealthiest and most honored men of Judah—is showing her favor. Long since a widower and determined to stay that way, Boaz finds himself irresistibly drawn to the foreign woman with the dark, haunted eyes. He tells himself he is only being kind to his cousin Naomi's chosen daughter when he goes out of his way to protect her from harm, but his heart knows better.

Obstacles. Heartache. Withered dreams. How can God forge love, passion, and new hope between two such different people?

I've read my share of historical religious novels, but this one hit a new level for me. Tessa Afshar's "In The Field of Grace" is a wonderful retelling of the story of Ruth. I say 'retelling' tentatively, because nothing is really changed in this story-only added. Afshar not only expands upon the courageous story of Ruth- a woman of incredible loyalty, faith, and dedication- but expands upon the lessons that both Ruth and Boaz learned through their experiences. Looking back on the story of Ruth in the Bible, I see things that I hadn't seen before. The risks that Ruth took. The extraordinary kindness Boaz exhibited, in spite of the social norms of the day. The second chance that both individuals had at life, a widow and a widower that suffered tremendous difficulties in life. Afshar also brings the faith of God to life in a way that will inspire you in your own prayers.
I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a story of redemption, faith, love, or the power of ordinary people. Historical and theological fans would also enjoy this novel, as Afshar clearly does her research on mores and cultural stereotypes of the day.

I loved this book! I think it was my favorite of Tessa Afshar's thus far. I loved how she explored the cultural aspects of the story of Ruth as well as the emotional arc of the characters. Just lovely.

This book was brilliantly written. Loved it! The character development and the truths of His Word mingled throughout made a story I did not want to put down until the end! Such insight into the book of Ruth that I will not forget this story.

My interest in this book: I adore the story of Ruth and have read other novel-interpretations of the book so I wanted to give this one a try.

Ideas / message / plot: There are so many ideas that Tessa shares through this story of Ruth; all truths from the Bible woven with intricate and beautiful threads through this story.

Favorite characters, quotes / lines: I fell in love with Ruth and Boaz even more than before as I read this enchanting story.

"There is only one measure of true success, child. How close you remain by His side. Does the dust of His feet get on your cloak because you follow so close? Does the sound of His whisper reverberate in your ear because you have drawn so near?"

When I finished this book I felt: #thankful #bliss #joy #worship #GodisSOgood #blessed

Overall: Tessa Afshar retells this story with the beauty and grace that Mozart and the greats wrote symphonies. One section comes in--the strings--followed by the soft but powerful entrance of the woodwinds. Soon, every instrument is playing in a way that whisks you away into a world that moves and carries you on the back of God's glory, majesty and love.
