These stories are about members of a family living on islands off the shore of Virginia set in the past and in the future. They present a picture of almost universally misogynist men and their families struggling on the margins of society. The book falters in places but is interesting and very readable.

The Shore was a stunning debut. Though billed as a novel, this book feels like each chapter can function independently as a short story. There are, however, both obvious and subtle connections between chapters as Taylor weaves an unforgettable narrative about several generations of folks living on the rural islands off the coast of Virginia.

"What matters is that I have the stars, the marsh, the smudge of the barrier islands again, that I can trace the Milky Way, that my feet remember the shape of this land. That for right now they're all mine."
