Every Falling Star, the first book to portray contemporary North Korea to a young audience, is the intense memoir of a North Korean boy named Sungju who is forced at age twelve to live on the streets and fend for himself. To survive, Sungju creates a gang and lives by thieving, fighting, begging, and stealing rides on cargo trains. Sungju richly re-creates his scabrous story, depicting what it was like for a boy alone to create a new family with his gang, his "brothers"; to be hungry and to fear arrest, imprisonment, and even execution. This riveting memoir allows young readers to learn about other cultures where freedoms they take for granted do not exist.

A deep book, and one that you can read over and over again, understanding more and more of the story. Suitable for teens, this book can take you on a journey through the childhood of Sungju and his brothers. When you finish my ou will be sure to appreciate more of what you have now. Highly recommend!

I've read several excellent books by young women who escaped from North Korea to South Korea and I found their personal stories fascinating and well worth reading. The women authors mentioned gangs of young men who were dangerous and violent and threatened people in the farmers' markets in N. Korea. This is the first account I've read by a young man who was in one of those gangs. I encourage you to read this one, but not only this one. Check out, also, the biographies of, e.g., Yeonmi Park or Hyeonseo Lee for books that fill in the experiences of women escapees from N. Korea through China and other routes. Quite topical.
