Cork O'Connor journeys from Minnesota to the Arizona desert in July with his new wife, Rainy Bisonette, seeking information about her son, Peter, who vanished after leaving a cryptic message in which he seemed to confess to a killing. Cork and Rainy fly to Coronado County, where they believe Peter has been working as a counselor at a high-end drug-rehab center, only to learn that Peter was fired a year earlier. Following the only lead they have, the two head to the desert town of Sulfur Springs, where a war is going on along the border involving drug traffickers, illegal immigrants, and a small group of activists trying to help the most vulnerable survive.
